Being a boutique part IS the problem. Not only can't Intel go there, but neither can 99% of typical AMD buyers. The fact that this appears to be done for marketing reasons is a slap in the face to the AMD fanbase which bought AMD parts because of reasonable prices and excellent performance/$ ratio.

How can AMD get me to buy twice as many Semprons or Athlon 64s? Allow AM2 Sempron or Athlon 64 to run on this board. I'll buy twice as many Athlon 64 FX CPUs too once this socket is available. Unfortunately two times zero equals zero. If nothing else the energy-efficient Athlons should be allowed to run on this board because they already command a premium price and lower power consumption would be a concern in this type of system.
