i dunno, i think Grant is widely considered the "best" (i.e., "most eloquent") financial writer, even by people who disagree with him. myself, i have had good luck by following his picks selectively and i can forgive a guy a lot if he writes well. i don't follow all his picks, just maybe three times a year (out of 24 issues). but it has more than paid for the sub.

as for Grant's attitude about the military, i think he was in the service himself at one point so that probably impacts his perspective. Grant is like a god to professional goldbugs and bears. they all want to speak at his conference. he even got Volcker to speak at the spring conference. goldbugs should like Grant--he gives them an air of intellectual respectability, kind of like trostky does. if the only people touting gold are the yobs with combovers and dirty fingernails, you'll never attract the whiteshoes.

re Grant's: I was just annoyed that he would fill up half an issue with that piece. Guess he had to show subscribers what he had been up to that week that he hadn't been able to write his newsletter.
