Europe charges high gas taxes for several reasons. Their cities were built for horses, most of them have no oilfields and they are concerned about the environmental impact of burhning so much oil and gas. Those gas taxes aree then used to subsidized excellent public transporation systems so most people don't even need to own a car.

We need to learn from the Europeans on public transport and environmentalism, the Japanese on efficient auto-making, the Brazilians on getting off oil and the Canadians on health care. All are leaving us behind in the dust.
