There are Cu-Nickel predominant, Palladium predominant, and Platinum predominant PGE deposits. PGE's are found in massive sulphide, and disseminated sulphide deposits. There is always a bit of copper and nickel in every PGE deposit. (Shebandowan in NW Ontario is a camp where Inco produced from a Cu-Ni deposit that had PGE values that formed a large part of the production value of the ore.) FNX however is on the Sudbury CU-Ni rich rim and the deposit there has the majority of its values in PGE's in massive to semi-massive sulphides. About 30 miles away to the SE in the Grenville rocks, PFN's River Valley deposit is in weakly disseminated (<5%) sulphides in a gabbroic rock near a large scale intrusive contact. azom.com The existence of disseminated sulphides outside the nickel rim of Sudbury was known to exist for 50 years or more, but its potential was ignored as nobody in the financial community could understand why anyone would want to mine it if Inco wouldn't. It is an example of the knee jerk reactionary pseudo expertise of the brokerage community holding back a country's mineral development.
