Your hypothetical is flawed. "For a minute assume ..." If I were anyone or all of those countries and the USA was threatening to end my existence, or to inflict as much damage as possible to me as soon as they could develop the weaponry to do so, I would do everything possible to stop the USA from developing those weapons. Why is it that you left that very real, and stated objective of the current Iranian leadership out of your hypothetical analogy? For a minute assume (the realality of our situation) that there are direct aggressive and credible threats to the USA being promulgated by the Iranian leadership. What is so hard about that?
