>>GM's Lutz takes Friedman from New York Times to task<<

Now GM (and Ford) will hand the buyer $US 1000. What a joke that is. Let's be honest here. This is no way to run a business. The economic purpose of any business is to end up with earnings high enough to make profits and pay enticing dividends to its investors. Economically, the way to do that is to constantly renew its capital plant to even better products in the future, in the process taking market share away from lesser competitors. Last I looked, GM has had its sales over the last year fall 16 percent with car sales diving 19 percent and light trucks 13 percent. Ford has seen its sales fall by 1.9 percent, while Chrysler came in with a fall in sales of 11 percent. Toyota saw its US sales soar by 17 percent over the past year. Mercedes, Honda, Fiat, Volvo, etc., all increased sales.
