Advanced Micro Devices-AMD concerns of overcapacity, could lose mkt share@JPMS
Neutral rated AMD recently held their analyst meeting where management announced
their intent to double internal processor capacity from 47M units in 2005 to
90-100M units by 2007, and 180M units by the end of 2009. This is much higher
than JPMorgan's assumptions of 40%-50% growth. JPMorgan is concerned at the
continued risk of overcapacity and increased expenses. While the firm believes
AMD should have an overall edge in servers, they feel Intel (INTC) will have the
performance advantage in desktop processors after their Conroe release next
month. They feel AMD will lose market share to Intel in the second half of 2006,
possibly into the first half of 2007, until new architecture has been released.

Well, Nicolaus Stiffel, source of that report, doesn't have a very good track record on Intel: They've never deviated from a BUY since April 2004 when the price was in the high 20's. They've repeated the BUY 9 times since them, with price targets ranging from $38 to $27. The most recent BUY was shortly before Intel plunged through $20, where they set a price target of $27.
