Multiple bear sightings in Dutchess County

wcax.com

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Dutchess County residents are taking down their bird feeders and locking up their garbage -- bears have been sighted in the area for the past three days.

The animals have been sighted on the Marist College campus and elsewhere, raising concerns for area residents.

Paul Hood, an animal control officer for the Town of Beekman, says he's seen eleven bears in the last week and half -- and that's normal.

In the meantime, the state Department of Environmental Conservation has decided to organize public meetings to address the multitude of nuisance calls about bears.

DEC spokesperson Wendy Rosenbach says the bears may be controlled through hunting, a method used to control the deer population in New York.
