According to Bernanke's textbook which I used for the Introductory Economics course I taught the primary cause of the Great Depression was bad economic policy which turned a minor recession into a depression. This included raising interest rates and tightening monetary conditions after the initial stock crash, trying to balance the budget and increasing protectionism. I agree with him up to a point.
