It is pretty safe to assume that K8L will be defective and that is why AMD has FB-DIMM on their roadmap as well. Athlon 64/Opteron thrive on low latency memory, exactly what FB-DIMM is not. Obviously AMD would only move to FB-DIMM under dire circumstances. It is possible, more likely probable, that AMD will be recalling more non-FB-DIMM Opterons in the next couple years.
