TIGERS AT WHITE SOX: Round Two

freep.com

<<...Manager Jim Leyland didn't heap extra importance on the series, either. When he greeted the media in his office after Sunday's game, he pointedly repeated that he believed in his team.

"We can play with anybody," he said.

Leyland was tired of the talk that his team hadn't beaten anybody before the stretch against the American League's powerhouses, and when he was asked if the Tigers had learned anything about themselves after going 2-5 against the Yankees and Red Sox, he said of his team:

"I don't think they learned anything about themselves. I think they already knew about themselves. They've got strong character. They've been battling their ass off. We did fine. We should've split with the Yankees and taken two of three from the Red Sox. We didn't. So you tip your hat to them."

Centerfielder Curtis Granderson can't wait for the series against the White Sox. Not because he's from the Chicago area, but because the Tigers are traveling there for the first time in a long while with something at stake.

"We are actually in contention," he said. "We are actually playing well. They are trying to gain ground on us, for a change."

Said Inge: "If you can't get up for that trip, then you don't have a pulse."...>>

Rogers retires 17 straight as Tigers top White Sox

Thursday, June 08, 2006

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Kenny Rogers threw seven strong innings, retiring the final 17 straight batters he faced, to help Detroit avoid the a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Rogers (8-3) picked up his first win in four starts after allowing two runs on six hits, as the Tigers stopped a three-game slide and beat the White Sox for the first time in six meetings this season.

Placido Polanco and Marcus Thames hit two-run homers, and Omar Infante and Carlos Guillen each had an RBI for Detroit, which holds a 1 1/2 game lead over Chicago for first place in the AL Central.

Jon Garland (4-3) was saddled with the loss after being charged with six runs on nine hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Paul Konerko had a two-run home run for the White Sox, who have lost six of their last nine games.

The game was knotted at 2-2 going into the sixth inning, but the Tigers scored four times to take control of the game. With two outs and Ivan Rodriguez on second, Guillen smacked a single to center that scored Rodriguez, and Guillen moved to second on the throw to home. Infante plated Guillen with a single and Thames followed with a homer over the left field wall to make it a 6-2 contest.

Rogers settled down after giving up two runs in the first. He allowed two singles in the second, but mowed down the final 17 batters before being replaced on the mound in the eighth by Fernando Rodney.

Todd Jones shut down Chicago in the ninth to secure the victory.

The White Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Jim Thome punched a two- out single to center and Konerko followed that with a blast over the right- center field wall.

Detroit tied the game in the third inning. Chris Shelton drew a lead-off walk, but the next two Detroit batters recorded outs. Polanco, though, smacked a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.

Game Notes

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede left the game in the third inning with a lower back strain. He is listed as day-to-day...The White Sox host Cleveland for a three-game set starting on Friday...Rogers improved to 14-7 versus the White Sox...The Tigers travel to Toronto for a three-game set starting on Friday...Garland fell to 10-5 versus Detroit.

Glenn: I feel like sending this email to the Cubs' General Manager...

Jim Hendry: This is the type of lead-off hitter the Cubs need...

Tigers' Granderson could have stayed at home, but was overlooked

Jim Hendry: You OVERpaid for a marquee player but who is getting the best return on investment??...Dombrowski is one of the best GM's in MLB and I think you know that...The bottom line is every successful team needs a lead-off hitter who is very productive...Juan Pierre is a great guy and is a hard worker BUT he's not getting on base enough and he just doesn't have much power or the ability to get those crucial timely hits. It doesn't matter whether you're spending a few hundred thousand or close to $6 Million BUT the lead-off hitter has to deliver for the team...Is it a problem with your scouts or have your coaches turned Juan Pierre into a chronic under-performer...?

Just Wondering.

{...Meanwhile, you had to draft and draft well: Justin Verlander. Joel Zumaya. Curtis Granderson. Those three players have meant everything to how the Tigers have changed character and competitiveness...}
