I don't know how universal this is, but two years ago I went to a Memorial Day assembly at my wife's High School alma mater. Her dad, a B-17 pilot and POW was there, along with four or five rows of veterans.

The kids were very orderly, quiet, and respectful, and their offering was wonderful.

For myself, I was nearly in tears with appreciation for those old guys, heroes every one whether they flew a desk, a Garand, or a B-17 during the War. In less than a decade nearly all of them will be gone.

Damn it, I think it is our responsibility to make sure these kids know who sacrificed for them. My generation, the one with hippies and pot smoking and silly assed war protests, is to blame if the kids don't know.
