The IRA is/was criminal and viscious. However, criminal violence was/is not isolated to the IRA.

The IRA were terrorists, when you go to blow up a government, or plan to execute the Head of State you have passed criminal and viscious, you are simply a terrorist. Like all terrorists they depend on criminal activities to finance their terror activities. Were there other criminal groups opposed to them, sure no doubt about it. Was there a certain amount of right on their side, without a doubt. But we tend to romanticize people we sympathise with. And the IRA were stone cold killers who devoted themselves and their lives to terror. They were no different than Bader Meinhof or any other group of terrorists. And like the PLO or any of a dozen other terrorist groups they collected financing from Canada in large quantities.

BTW this isn't particularly a criticism of the IRA, but I think that we in the western world tend to romanticize our terrorists, and killers, while condemning those of other countries.....

The rightwing GOP championed gerrymandering which protected most incumbants despite a landslide vote against the Bushie rightwing. If not for Gerrymandering since 1994, 75 Republicans would have been thrown out of office. And probably zero democrats.

democrats have earned their chance to lead and do it right. The GOP rightwing had six years of total power and completely blew it on just about every level imaginable.
