Ever since the renaissance there have been those who in one way or another celebrate a god of ignorance. They look to where there are explanations and say that is knowledge, and where the explanations are currently lacking they say that is god. Their problem is that as more is known, the god's portion of the universe gets smaller. I think I detect an attempt to claim that the unknown is growing, and therefore the nooks and crannys where god hides are growing too.

I think a better refuge for spirituality is in the Gaia or similar hypothesis. This allows for the higher purpose and greater awareness funcions of spirituality without getting caught up in specific contradictions or self defeating beliefs such as gay-bashing or evangelicalism.
