It leaves the atheist not reciting the Pledge or leaving out the "under God" part. It doesn't mean that said atheist hasn't committed his allegiance to his country. The objection is only to the particular wording of that particular expression, the Pledge.

Just because you haven't said "I love you" to someone doesn't mean you don't love that person. Some people just aren't the type to articulate it in that form. Conversely, some people use the expression promiscuously. You can't draw any conclusions solely from whether someone says it or doesn't say it. It's not a perfect proxy. You have to look at their acts and their heart.
