I'm sure you're more than willing to blame the current administration for every situation he inherited from the previous administration, with NO SUPPORT from the democrats in eliminating illegal immigration. Not interested in pursuing the world changed after 9/11 are you? Or that Bush is doing nothing other than encouraging illegal immigration? I support the House Resoultion. Fix the border and then we can talk about immigration reform. As shocking as it may be to you, I agree with Newt Gingrich on this issue. We can't just ship back 10% of Mexico's population and then deny them re-entry to the US. And if you believe that we can, or should, do just that, you're a fool. Only a handful of politicians are proposing that. It's so small a group as to be irrelvant. Your parroting of that particular objection is a red herring. If you think it's not a red herring, name me five members of Congress that propose shipping 10-20 million illegals back to Mexico and Central America. Five, just five. HOWEVER, we CAN facilitate documenting them and issuing temporary guest worker status upon completion of a background check. The US doesn't have the personnel resources to even keep track of the legal immigrants we have in the US right now, let alone another 10-20 million. You're just going to do background checks on 10 million illegals. With a snap of your fingers I suppose. You're the fool. Arlen Specter slips in an amendment to the reform bill that requires the US coordinate with Mexico prior to building a fence/wall. A built in provision to ensure that border never gets sealed up. I bought into the amnesty program by Reagan. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. [Not exactly as elequent as Bush, but you can perhaps figure it out.] Even if you assume that we're going to have all the resources to even register the illegals, let alone background checks and follow on monitoring requirements. What makes you think the illegals are going to come up with valid proof of residency? There's bound to be a significant industry in forging electric and phone bills and whatever documents they can think of to "prove" they've been in the US for 5 years. None of that would stop any additional illegal immigration. I know, we'll just enforce the law on employers. Easy to promise. Just like promising we'll get rid of waste, fraud and abuse in government. Show me the money. Protect the borders and enforce the law on employers FIRST. Then I'll be more than happy to support immigration reform. BTW, if the employers stop hiring illegals, they'll go back to their home countries on their own. No jobs, there is no point in staying in the US. jttmab P.S. Last time I heard, Newt is still a Republican.
