The current climate of legislating social relations and affiliations is threatening to a lot of people. The threat is not the legislation, but in the rhetoric of the critics. Take for example gay marriage. No rational person would ever think that their own marriage would be threatened because some other couple that they probably didn't even know got married. They have an irrational fear because they have been taught since childhood to fear other supernatural boogey-men. You aren't going to talk or reason people out of an idea like that. There is no reality to ground an argument. Ultimately you are going to have to suppress those who are teaching this nonsense, and that means addressing those who feel they are just harmless cranks too. TP
