Not so long ago, Japanese were glorifying suicide attacks. In fact, whereas Islam prohibits suicide, the Buddhist perspective is a lot more lenient...I am not sure which single sect of Islam it is that you think suicide attacks stem from. I can think of several. And in each case the question you should be asking is "why now".

The Japanese did it in worshipping their emperor. Most of the population was ready to commit suicide to fight our invasion before the A bomb, and suitable explosives had been prepared. If the emperor hadn't surrendered, they would have.
