That is simple to answer. It is the only path they see available to them. I assure you that if you gave them B2 bombers and Cruise missiles they would not resort to suicide bombing. Similarly, if you formed some kind of fair political solution, that is what they would have taken. However political solution demands equity of power, otherwise, the human nature being what it is, the much stronger would never negotiate in fair manner with the much weaker party...so that brings us to where we are.

I think you will find the answer to many of these questions here atimes.com or at least you will see a different perspective. It is an excellent read.
