Similarly, if you formed some kind of fair political solution, that is what they would have taken. However political solution demands equity of power, otherwise, the human nature being what it is, the much stronger would never negotiate in fair manner with the much weaker party...so that brings us to where we are. Chamberlain thought so. However, he found that Hitler was working with a definition of "fair" that was fundamentally incompatible with the British definition of "fair", as it involved the Third Reich conquering Europe. But all the way through, Hitler claimed he only wanted what was "fair" for the Germans. Arafat and Hamas just wanted/want what is "fair" too. But their "fair" is a one state solution - no Israel. Just a reminder that it is not "fair" (if I dare use the word) to judge the result of negotiations purely on whoever you deem to have been the more powerful at that moment.

< It is the only path they see available to them.> A different way to lay it out, at least from my understanding, is their leaders teach a different set of moral values and they know no other path. I give you the Iranian President and his quest to acquire nuclear weapons, his holy grail as it were, as the perfect example. When that happens do you think his response will be to sit down and negotiate with Israel as equals ? His morality or religious beliefs glorify death and as a result he will turn Israel into glass. How do you deal with his morals and negotiate "fairly" ? How do you undo generations of teachings such as these ?
