Kerry specifically requested duty he knew to be combat oriented, the Swiftboats. He knew they were used to patrol the Mekong River which was "hot". Kerry wanted to make a difference in the war. That's clear from the document. He could have easily dodged the war and putting himself in harm's way like Bush did.

Furthermore, once Kerry got into combat he became a real gung-ho leader. His commanders were amazed by his courage beyond the call of duty, and his idea to charge INTO enemy fire every time it came from the banks, instead of running away from it as had been done in the past.

This amazing courage was exactly what terrified the Bush campaign so much that they invented the smearvets campaign to throw mud and BS on it. It was the most disgraceful chapter in the history of US politics, along with Bush's smearing of McCain in 2000, part of the same deal planned by some of the same people behind the scenes.
