Kerry specifically volunteered for combat, that is swiftboat duty in VIETNAM, not in San Diego. The form is very clear he is volunteering for Swiftboat duty in Nam, which he knew would mean combat.

By doing so, he knew he was going to be in very dangerous situations. You can see on the form that Kerry wanted to make a difference in Vietnam. Not back home. He was going to war and he wanted to be in the middle of the action. To suggest otherwise is blatantly dishonest.

Meanwhile, you can see on Bush's form that he specifically refused to volunteer for Vietnam. Or anywhere with 7000 of a fight where he might get hurt. The Guard unit he joined (then abandoned) was known as a "champagne unit", that is a way for rich and well-connected guys to avoid the war. Bush got himself put in front of the line despite a failing test score, then quit and went AWOL before he was ever certified as a pilot. He totally lies about this in his autobiography.

Now you can see why Rove was desperate to launch the smearvets. Not only to throw mud at a real hero Kerry, but also to change the subject from GW's own dishonorable lack of service.
