Democracy may just not be the answer. We should go back and start studying how we contained the soviets. Containing islam might be the next job. How do you negotiate with these guys? How do you protect the oil? News is getting worse and worse. One thing we can do is recognize the sunni/shiaa split much as we did sino/soviet back then. Wish Sun hadnt left just yet. I think we have to ally with shiaa iran and their proxy shiaa iraq (if it splits) along with moderate states such as egypt and jordan as part of the ring of containment around sunni extremists in arabia area. At the same time, we need to ally with india, russia, china and existing govts in pakistan, other stans and afgainistan, in order to contain sunni extremists in south asia. We need to destroy al quaeda and stop playing at democracy in iraq, or equating iran with the wahabi extremists. In those terms it may be valuable for an iran with better relations with the US to have the bomb. Iran/Israel of course needs to tone it down too.
