Fire still burns inside Tigers' Leyland

sun-sentinel.com

<<...There were whispers he might not have the energy and fire to manage the way he once did. Two months in, that misguided notion has gone up in flames.

"He doesn't walk in here with a resume and expect you to respect him," Tigers catcher Vance Wilson says. "He still wants to earn it, and he does it handling the team. He lets you know it's his team and he doesn't put up with crap and he holds you accountable for playing the game the right way."

"He knows what it takes to win," says Tigers President Dave Dombrowski, who hired Leyland with the Marlins and again with the Tigers, a team 13 years removed from its last winning season. "He keeps you focused as a club, and they believe in him. He also likes people. He likes to get to know about them."

That's evident in the personal touch Leyland often shows, whether it be writing a letter to every player over the winter or showing interest when rookie reliever Joel Zumaya brings his St. Bernard puppy around. Leyland pets frisky little Roscoe and cautions Zumaya to "keep that dog out of this heat. I'm serious."

And then Leyland, fully alive again, ambles off to another corner of the clubhouse...>>

a19,

He'd never make it in Boston. <G>

Too bad my Giants didn't sign him as protection for Bonds. Hell, on that team, he'd be a spring chicken.
