Volunteered for Vietnam and excelled as a combat leader. But also grew more and more concerned about the wrong direction the war was taking, and more disturbed by the massive waste of human life and other atrocities (Agent Orange, napalm, burning down rural villages, etc.).

In fact, this very type enlightened soldier probably exists in significant numbers today in Iraq. Questioning the war and realizing it's senseless, but also fighting courageously day in, day out and winning the respect of his brothers in arms.

Now compare this reality to what the smearvets were saying.
Their claims have nothing to do with truth or reality whatsoever.
