Iraqi Leader to Release 2,500 Prisoners
By CHRISTINE HAUSER

Iraq's prime minister, Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, said today that he would order the release of 2,500 detainees from Iraqi custody and American-run detention centers, as part of "national reconciliation" efforts.

He added that a committee would be formed to review the status of detainees, who would be released over the next few days. He said prisoners could be released in cases where there is insufficient evidence, or where the detainees "want to revise their stands" and "merge in their society." None accused of taking a direct hand in killings or bombings would be released, he said.

Mr. Maliki, speaking in a televised news conference, said he hoped the detainees would "comply with their commitments of not objecting to the political process violently."

The release would be the largest since Saddam Hussein's government was toppled by the American-led invasion in April, 2003. It comes at a very sensitive time in Iraq, when surging violence has raised fears of deepening sectarian conflict.

At the same time, Iraqi political leaders remained deadlocked for a seventh week over who would be named to the most important positions in the Iraqi cabinet, the ministers of defense and interior. The stalemate has left Iraq rudderless when it urgently needs a full and functioning government.
