Wishful thinking.

Re: I think HP will have a very hard time selling a dual core Conroe 2.4 GHz PC or the same price as a dual core 3.2 GHz P4 PC, no matter how good it is in benchmarks. But the X2 4400+ right next to it will have the same price sticker and outsell it.

And, yes, I know the Conroe will outperform it in most single core benchmarks, but who knows that?

The new branding and lower frequencies may be somewhat of a deterent for the first few months. It is unclear whether there would be enough CPUs and motherboards available if demand was extremely high shortly after launch. Intel had few problems converting their mobiles from the high-frequency Pentium 4 to low-frequency Pentium M.

Under your scenario AMD is relying on the ignorance of the consumer to sell systems. That will work for a while. But even with Intel's massive TV and print advertising budget, co-marketing dollars and name recognition retail P4 sales ground to a halt in only a couple years after the Prescott launch. If AMD shelf space shrinks in the next 6-12 months due to the improved Conroe and Merom products the 4400+ may never get placed on the shelves.
