It was a slow process...for AMD. AMD didn't have the big advertising budgets, massive fab capacity, name recognition or retail shelf space to fight Intel. AMD got nothing easy because a superior product (if not in performance, then in performance/price) is ALL they had. AMD loses most of that superiority for at least a year, and perhaps longer.
