I understand that it's the tradition. I think it's an admirable tradition when the "you" being retrieved is a live person.

I have never, but I can easily imagine it. It would give me no comfort--actually it would give me fear and pain--to think that one or more of my brothers and sisters might die just to keep the buzzards off my carcass. If that happened, I would surely roll over in my grave, if I had one.

when men are going into combat there is always the fear of death, but its been my experience that fear is alleviated somewhat knowing you wont be left behind.

Fear of death is one thing. Fear of post-mortem body mutilation is quite another. How one's fear of post-mortem body mutilation could possibly be mitigated by the contemplation of the death of one's fellows is way beyond my capacity for self-centeredness.
