NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Dow Jones Indexes is launching a new blue-chip index that will measure the performance of the 50 largest and most liquid companies in Brazil, Russia, India and China.

The new product, called the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index, is designed to serve as an underlying index for investment products such as mutual funds, exchange- traded funds and other investable products.

The number of components in the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index is fixed at 15 each for Brazil, India and China and five components for Russia to reflect the size of each market in the index. In a statement, the index provider said that each component's weight is capped at 10% of the index's total free-float market capitalization to prevent any one component stock being overweight.

Dow Jones Indexes is a part of Dow Jones & Co. (DJ) which also publishes Dow Jones Newswires, The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, the Far Eastern Economic Review, MarketWatch and the Ottaway group of community newspapers.
