Dennis called at 5 p.m. MDT 6/7/06 and position was 26:35 N 90:18 W They were making about 4.5 knots on flat seas when he called, and that's about the best for most of the day. He said "everything sort of fell apart on us about midnight, and we were just drifting around for about six hours." I asked what their course was and he said, "We're headed for Port Aransas." He was in high spirits and we had a couple of laughs about the situation. He estimated they're about 360 miles from Port Aransas. "How's the food holding out," I asked, "do you have enough to get you to Port Aransas?" "That depends on when we get there," he said. "If we get there by Monday or Tuesday, we're OK. If we get there Wednesday or Thursday, we're down to the olives and onions. If we get there later than that, it's down to salt and pepper." When we were in St. Thomas, I had a little skin rash and bought some rubbing alcohol and cotton balls to use to dry it up. "Your rubbing alcohol and cotton are coming in handy," he said. "That's what we're using to cook." He said they fired up that McGyver (??) stove this afternoon and cooked up some mashed potatoes and tuna. "We're doing OK," he repeated. Everybody OK?, I asked. "We're all doing great," he said. "Well, Greg got a little out of hand once, but we applied a 2-by-4 and he's OK now." Big laugh from everybody. I gotta tell ya, they're a helluva bunch. I was about stark, raving looney after the extended periods of drifting we had on the first leg of the trip, and that was just 6 days, but they've been enduring this for more than three weeks, and still looking at maybe another week, and are still rational. More when I hear it. *********************************************************** thanks for the report howard. here are a few technical comments i'll share... 1) they are 148 nm south of the sticky-outy part of louisiana 2) they are 370 nm east-south-east of port aransas 3) they made 93 nm in the last 25 hours since the last report (3.7 kts avg.) 4) bad news and good news... the NOAA forecast for the NW quadrant of the gulf of mexico is: THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY...VARIABLE WINDS 10 KT OR LESS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FT. SUNDAY... E TO SE WINDS 10 KT OR LESS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FT. (i don't know why they type these in all caps??) they'll be going slower than they like but they'll have no dangerous weather to deal with through sunday. they should keep the 2X4 handy for greg, but other than that they'll make it just fine. 5) they're out of the area where they'll get help from surface ocean currents so they'll have to get what they can from the light, variable winds. tom and greg are VERY good at this... they beat all of the boats on elephant butt last summer in exactly those conditions 6) captn gary has a friend (captn chris - i've met him too) who is in corpus christi with his trawler. if they get stalled for too long out there and run out of food, captn chris will zip on out with provisions of steaks, cold beers, limes, ice, and butane to save their sanity. (you may have to reimburse him for diesel fuel and ice) 7) my conservative guess is that they'll make it into port aransas early monday morning (june 12)... and greg will have a headache 8) that is all for now -dust of blue frog
