"it continues to puzzle me why the iranians take such an extreme rejectionist stance on israel. Being for 67 borders is one thing--being for annihilaiton is quite another, not to mention holocaust denial rhetoric along with elders of zion bull shit."

Maybe just a ploy for local consumption; "if you get mad at Israel, you won't be mad at my government"

"Maybe its just a bargaining ploy for a grand reconciliation between islam and the west. Bin Laden will be after them one day anyway. Its in their interest to position with russia, china, india but if an opening occurs for reconciliation with the US, iran should take it. And visa versa. "

It's the Great Game. We are losing it to Russia and China. They be buying long term energy while we go bankrupt fighting for it. They are gonna win. We need to reconnect with Iran.

Agreed. I think Iran has a bit of a problem with their historical support of Pals, hence the Israel problem. They have beat that drum so long, that to stop now will produce a rather frightening silence, so what to do.

Behind the scenes, Bush should be working to bring Iran into the community of nations while making an Iranian/Israeli peace agreement a cornerstone. In exchange, the US should then address Israeli nuclear issues.
