anyone in harm's way knows that his family will be able to pay their respects to him. It also promotes bonding and selflessness, two military virtues.

I can't reconcile being willing to let someone die so your family gets to pay final respects to your former self and the notion of "selflessness." Quite the opposite. If it matters to the family to have a body, for whatever reason/emotion, then that's worth something. But something considerably less than further loss of life and limb.
