B.C. gov’t approves Kitimat gas terminal Jun 13 2006 peacearchnews.com The B.C. government has given environmental approval for the first liquid natural gas terminal on North America’s west coast, at Bish Cove south of Kitimat. Calgary-based Kitimat LNG Inc. still requires federal approval to build the facility, which would offload the liquefied fuel from ships and feed it into the North American natural gas pipeline system. The $500 million project includes a marine terminal, storage facilities, regasification and pipeline works, as well as an access road, pipelines and electrical lines on Crown land. Kitimat LNG signed an agreement last year with the Haisla First Nation to locate the facility on Haisla reserve land at Bish Cove. It is expected to generate 700 construction jobs and result in 50 permanent jobs. The facility is one of several proposed to bring imported gas to both coasts of North America, from exporting countries such as Australia and Indonesia. A second LNG terminal is proposed by WestPac LNG Corp. for Ridley Island near Prince Rupert.
