I own and follow WDC. I will give you the WDC non PC products from the WDC website. Keep in mind WDC was not in any of these businesses 6 years ago, so WDC changes with the times.

"WD hard drives have helped enable the digital content revolution since we first began shipping to Microsoft® Xbox in 2001. Today WD drives can be found in a multitude of digital video recording products including personal video recorders (PVRs), digital video recorders (DVRs), and set-top boxes (STBs). We understand the unique requirements of this specialized storage-enabled market and our drives deliver the characteristics CE manufacturers seek most - quiet operation, low temperature and power consumption specifications, high reliability, and optimized streaming capabilities.
Our DVR/PVR/STB customers benefit from the significant design advances in WD's hard drive technology that combine optimized AV performance with best-in-class power consumption and thermally optimized operation. These design innovations result in unparalleled cost of ownership which helps our customers increase market share in the competitive world of consumer electronics and digital video broadcasting. "

Flash is ~40+ times more expensive then HD per gig. In my opinion this probably will not get better ... as flash gets cheaper HD get denser.

There will always be "must have" applications which need more memory. We started with storing numbers, then text, then pictures, then audio, now video, next HiDef video and better audio, onto 3D video anyone? ... we now need to store it at home and on the go ... soon in all your cars ... your mp3 player will also be your camera, camcorder, entertainment center, phone and who knows what else ... so just when you think flash has enough storage you'd might just opt for a HD version anyway because of all the other "must have" things one needs.

I think hard drives will be around for a while.

Edit: this is all assuming that no new technology comes along ... then both might be pushed out the door ;->
