It is going to brutal though.... In spite of the Doug's opinion that it is good for intel's profitability to give away chips for I think it is going to hit both intel and amd hard. I can not imagine why intel would initiate price war at this stage of the game.

I don't get it. What is the point of preannouncing a price cut 6 weeks before it takes place? Why would any sane OEM buy a single Intel chip between now and then? If a rebate is guaranteed, then Intel has to set up a reserve for it in Q2.

My second point is that if the launch is really going to happen late July they need these price cuts NOW, not then.

All of which makes me believe that desktop Conroe volumes will be very, very, very low until 2 months after the price cuts.

Even with these cuts, the 6XX P4s at $100 over the 5XX's are still ridiculously expensive. THose are the ones that go into DELL's business desktops. Does Intel think businesses are STUPID?
