It may be a specimen from a close family member (which is adequate) and not actually from him.

Or it may be a specimen taken from somthing he'd used and not taken directly from him. This is very likely because various security forces got awfully close to him the last few years but couldn't actually make the snatch.

If that be the case, why could the SOB not be eliminated when the original sample was taken ?

You can get a sufficient DNA sample from a toothbrush or hair in a hairbrush or comb (or turban?). Don't need much, just need to be sure you got it from the right person.

Family members can also give samples that you can crosscheck to make sure nobody's pulling your leg.

The Jordanians might have some hair or blood samples, since Zarqawi spent time in jail in Jordan.
