My dad is one of those dead people. I don't think my parents bought the house to leave us money, nor did he invest with the idea of leaving us money. He did invest with the idea of giving their kids and grandkids things; like they gave Mall Rat 50 shares of what is now TGT. I think he would be pleased to know she still has 300 of those shares to pay for college, and the cash for the other 300 shares will also pay for college. He'd be even more pleased to find out she doesn't need it, cuz of scholarships.
He would also probably appreciate the fact that those of us who were prudent don't need any inheritance. Then, there is my bro, but that's another story.

If people want to leave stuff to their kids, they can do something like Dad did with me..."Here is a bunch of gold coins. Put them in your safety deposit box and save them for an emergency". Still sitting there. (Dad's bro was a gold bug coin dealer, and a pharmacist in the old sense of the world.)

But, the government will piss it away, as you say. I'll let them piss my folks' money away in exchange for seeing them do the same thing with the Waltons.
