Democrats call Zarqawi killing a stunt
The Washington Times ^ | 4:09 p.m., June 8, 2006 | Amy Fagan

washingtontimes.com

Some Democrats, breaking ranks from their leadership, today said the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab Zarqawi in Iraq was a stunt to divert attention from an unpopular and hopeless war.

"This is just to cover Bush's [rear] so he doesn't have to answer" for Iraqi civilians being killed by the U.S. military and his own sagging poll numbers, said Rep. Pete Stark, California Democrat. "Iraq is still a mess -- get out."

Mary Matalin was on IMUS this morning and she said much the same thing as you re: Coulter. She did say that the wives in question had been used by democratic political operatives to push their agenda. To be fair both parties are always using heroes, victims, celebs to make their cases, even when in bad taste.

As for Coulter, I have several of her books and she has a humorously sharp tongue and wit, but her latest book is in bad taste.

I am in total agreement with you. While there is no question that some of the 9/11 widows have publicly enjoyed their new found wealth and celebrity status, Anne Coutler is completely off base to generalize their behavior. Listening to her on Hannity & Colmes last night made me wince. Regardless of their individual behavior, the widows have each suffered a devastating loss and it is completely inappropriate to demonize them as a group. It is unfortunate that they allowed themselves to be made political footballs (and not only by the left).

There is a subtle point to be made, and Ms. Coulter is not the one to make it. To a certain extent, we have allowed the 9/11 widows to dominate the public debate about our internal response to 9/11. While they certainly have the right to weigh in with their opinions, as we all do, their loss does not give them the right to dictate public policy.

Poor George Bush. He is demonized for not fully implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, and demonized for being overly aggressive on the issues of data mining and wire tapping.
