It's best, I think, to ignore what's happened to Bill's thread. I feel some sadness since I can't help viewing it in the light of the standard Ken (Faultline) set for high level, serious political conversation on FADG.

As for Nir Rosen's piece, of the many things I read about Iraq he always seems to write closest to the ground. I'm very impressed with his work.

Suma, if I recall correctly, Zarqawi was reprimanded by Zawahiri for conducting a campaign of terror in which large numbers of Muslims were being killed. Al-Qaeda exists to kill Americans and not Muslims. It is my understanding that the Al Qaeda leadership are Muslim fundamentalists and their belief prohibits them to kill Muslims en masse.

So in a way, folks like Al Zawahiri should be happy that the US did away with Zarqawi. And now it remains to be seen who Zarqawi's successor is going to be. Will this person advocate going after Muslim places of worship and Muslim neighborhoods or will this person i ncite his followers to target Americans in the Green Zone, their cafetarias etc.

Zarqawi's death must be about the 5th or 6th alleged turning / tipping point in Iraq at least, Uday, Qusay, Sadam, elections, constitutions - all good for another round of gloating triumphalism, and a month later things looks worse than ever. Maybe this time will be different, but skepticism seems warranted after so many previous "triumphs". Just up in the Atlantic is this somewhat more grounded analysis from a favorite author of mine: theatlantic.com , readable in Message 22531889 for old times' sake.
