ADM and other large processors have lobbied the government to mandate ethanol be added to gasoline. The US automakers go along with their E85 vehicles to game the fuel efficiency requirements.

The bottom line is that ethanol exists solely for the benefit of the environmental, agricultural and automotive lobbies.

Best government money can buy <gg>
Whatcha expect .. This is a win-win-win-win

-Helps the farmer
-Energy dollars spent domestically rather than
supporting terrorists/countries that don't like us
-Utilizes existing liquid transport fuels infrastructure
-perpetuates internal combustion engine usage
-maintains status quo for TPTB

Triff ..

<<There is no measurable unburned hydrocarbons out the back of the exhaust pipe, that is taken care of by the catalytic converter.>>

60% less to slip by the cat converter.

<<Ethanol has 3% less energy per unit volume. >>

But it is an oxygenater which makes the gas burn better.

<<No, I am an engineer.>>

That's what I said, you're a city boy from the West Coast. We know you don't like people and products from "fly over" country.

Does "HW engineering" on your profile refer to hardware or hazardous waste?

I'm assuming based on your posts that you're an EE by training, and wondering how that makes you an expert on fuel? Even if you are a "rambling wreck from Georgia Tech."

I've been married for 26 years to a Ch.E./environmental engineer and he doesn't opine out of his field. Maybe he's just modest.
