Hopkins has always turned negatives into positives in his life. I'm pretty sure he used the Taylor "losses" as motivation for the Tarver fight. He knew he had really won those fights but I also believe he realized some mistakes were made and he needed to change his approach against Tarver.

If Taylor's performance against Hopkins was so terrific in both fights, why change trainers? DiBella and company knew they were lucky to get the decision both times and moved toward setting Taylor on a better course. DiBella's talking a lot of crap again about Wright and I think his golden boy Jermain is going to be unable to solve the Winky Wright puzzle.

Interesting story regarding your Atlantic City adventure, e. Funny you should mention Freddie Roach whom I regard very highly as a trainer. Taylor would have been much better off having him in his corner rather than Steward.

This is the quote I was referring to regarding Lou DiBella's trash talking which rubs me the wrong way. If the fighters do it to build up the gate for a fight I can tolerate it, but not from a promoter/manager. I'm not all that thrilled with Winky Wright as a fighter but I respect his skills. I view Taylor as a pushed, marketable guy who HBO likes to have as a name on their marquee.

DIBELLA LASHES OUT AT WINKY!

After confirming our breaking news regarding his potential August 5 HBO triple header [my note: Ike Quartey vs. Vernon Forrest which should be a good one], promoter Lou DiBella told Boxingtalk, "Tomorrow night Paulie's going to shock the world [oops!] and next week Jermain's going to shock Ronald." DiBella continued, "I want to tell Ronald that if he hasn't been able to secure an endorsement for the bottom of his shoes putting Winky Promotions on the soles of his shoes will be the best exposure his company is ever going to get."

Intriguing fight tomorrow night between champ Jermain Taylor vs. Winky Wright [HBO/9:30PM EST]. Taylor (DiBella) certainly don't lack for confidence taking on difficult southpaw Wright. Winky is not much of an offensive fighter and is two steps below Hopkins as a defensive fighter. That being said, Winky is still very tough and tough to look good against.

I'll give Taylor props for lasting the distance with Hopkins twice and for being competitive, but Taylor never solved Hopkins' style. Maybe new trainer Manny Steward will help Taylor, maybe he won't. Taylor's people obviously saw a need for a change and bringing in Steward for Pat Burns is a step up.

Wright has never been stopped and I don't see Taylor knocking him out. I see Wright doing enough to neutralize Taylor's offense and using his good jab to frustrate Taylor and force him to constantly have to reset. The thinking from Taylor's camp has to be to get by Winky's jab and then everything will fall into place. Easier said than done. Winky by split decision over Taylor (it would unanimous but for the HBO house fighter effect).
