Murtha (D-Pa.), the decorated military veteran who has become one of the party's loudest critics on the Iraq war, is traveling across the country to help his fellow Democratic candidates. Today, he arrived at Northwestern University with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.). A crowd of about 400 people in Evanston gave the pair a standing ovation. If Democrats win control of Congress in the midterm elections, Murtha pledged that "there will be a serious investigation, with full subpoena power" on how the Iraq war was conducted by the Bush administration. Murtha, the ranking Democrat on the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, renewed his call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign. He blamed President Bush for damaging the reputation of the nation, declaring: "Our prestige has dropped to the lowest credibility in the history of the United States." "We can't win this thing militarily. We're caught in a civil war," Murtha said. "I'm not saying there's going to be complete peace in Iraq when we leave. I am saying they're in a civil war and the only people who can solve it is the Iraqis."
