<Webster states clearly that "AWARE implies vigilance in observing or alertness in drawing inferences from what one experiences">

That is used to differentiate between synonyms...one can infer that we're talking about comparing usage in human communication... it clearly states:

Aware: having or showing realization, perception, or knowledge

<Why are you having difficulty with this??>

No difficulty... just:

<Are you seeking Truth or are you seeking to wipe out the footprints that lead to it??>

I'm seeking the truth... Why don't we look a little further than a side-note in websters and then decide:

en.wikipedia.org

This is certainly broader than you imply... and no reason to think "thinking" is needed:

In biological psychology, awareness describes a human or animal's perception and cognitive reaction to a condition or event. Awareness does not necessarily imply understanding, just an ability to be conscious of, feel or perceive.

Hmmmm, no easy answer here if your looking connecting the need for thinking to be aware:

" Researchers have debated what minimal components are necessary for animals to be aware of environmental stimulus, though all animals have some capacity for acute reactive behavior that implies a faculty for awareness."

You'd agree you don't have to be thinking to be aware, no? AND, don't scientists speak of all sorts life as exhibiting awareness??
