Eshbach Engineering manual circa 1934 lists tests on plates exposed to a salt water spray over a ten year period. The winners increasing order of protective efficacy were, galvanization, zinc electroplating, aluminum electroplating. I don't know about hot dip etc.. The manual is very explicit in saying that electroplating is superior and that aluminum is best although decidedly more expensive.

Not tested were things like triple anodization, coatings of titanium nitride, silicon steel, gold coating etc..
