On that fateful day, he came running into our apartment and banged his head on the top of the door frame. Everybody was in a state of shock, and the state side military was already deploying to repel an attack on the west coast. Germany and Japan were already kind of allies, and Germany had equipped the Japanese army with mouser rifles, and other tools of war, so I believe that Hitler would have been involved, but he probably wanted us to stay in the Pacific which would give him the advantage in Europe. He knew that Adm Yamamoto was correct when he said the the attack on Pearl Harbor had wakened a sleeping tiger. One of my Uncles was career Navy and was based on Pearl Harbor, but had the good fortune to be on a destroyer attached to the carrier task force of Bull Halsey and missed the fire works. He told me that all of the military leaders in Honolulu had told FDR the danger of positioning the entire Pacific Fleet in port all at one time. They were sitting ducks for the Japs, and we would have had no Navy in the Pacific, except plywood PT boats if Halsey had not suddenly found a way to have engine trouble which kept his entire task force out of Pearl. Some historians believe that FDR did it intentionally because his programs to bring the nation out of the Great Depression were not working, and he would lose face, not to mention any further election. The build up for the war was what brought the nation out of depression, and changed our lives forever. The country, and city, boys saw parts of the world they would never have done, they learned technology that was growing by leaps and bound, and to the male population's dismay, emancipated the women from being home bound. One of my Aunt's was a riveter in a B-24 factory. Another Uncle who had been a simple wheat farmer in Kansas, was almost suddenly the navigator on a B-17 flying missions across the channel to bomb Germany. The life that we had known was changed forever.
