just sell ownership certificates backed by geologist's reports.

Exactly - see how difficult it is for them to wrap thier mind around this concept. I dont believe GLD has any gold at all - paper gold - what a silly concept. Wont believe the bankers and crooks on money printing but will believe them on gold stores.

That is an interesting point of view. However, there are enough examples of mother nature playing tricks on geologists (nuggets effects, metals recovery problems, inaccuracies of sampling methods) to convince any above ground accountant that those ownership certificates would not be perfectly auditable. So that form of gold would still have to be discounted vs auditable gold in a safe vault.

Again, storage and insurance are really negligable. In some case, less than $2 per month, no matter how much gold you have.
