Hi Mike,

Dunno, perhaps your brother lives in Alberta where recently much has been done to clear up the backlog in hip and knee replacements. Just curious.

When (finally) properly diagnosed situations become flagged as emergent, the system can move with speeds that truly baffle patients (or parents).
That was our experience going on 13 years ago with our youngest son.

and am able to see my oncologist usually within days or immediately in an emergency.
Yup! When one reaches the top of the list, and actually get into the core of the system, things can happen very quickly.

Is our health care system flawed? Absolutely. Agreed!

But I also find that most patients that I meet don't… …take responsibility on managing their illnesses. Fair enough. I agree.

But I also find that most patients that I meet don't have a clue about how to access the system…
Dunno if it’s “ME” as in how “I” read this, or how it was written.
Complainers and whiners and screamers should have no access to the “Top of the List” unless their condition actually requires it.

But, That’s just me.

Mike...."This has not been my family's experience. My brother will
have knee replacement surgery in mid-July after a recommendation
from his surgeon who he saw 3 weeks ago. Yes he had to wait 8 weeks to see the surgeon.
".....

What I said is true. It took over a year and a half to get appointment with surgeon after referral from my family doctor.

Then after seeing surgeon I was placed on a 20 month waiting list...I have until this Feb. for my waiting time to be over.

After Feb. I will be able to get surgery within three months and possibly sooner if there is a cancellation.

That is how it is where I live in a Northern Ont community.

I was told I could get surgery much sooner if I wanted to go out of town to a place like Toronto, the USA etc. and incur whatever expenses that entails.

I am now able to get cortisone injections now within a week from surgeon.
