Lots of reasons for industrial food products to contain corn syrup, not just cheapness. Mostly longer shelf life.

If the huge price difference wasn't there, you would see a sugar industry marketing effort to replace corn syrup. And it would be effective for the reasons you have mentioned.

Except for pecan pie, there's pretty much nothing a home cook will put corn syrup in

Peanut butter and Karo dark syrup sandwiches are pretty good. <g>
