You need it to write .NET 2.0 apps, and to run them. That's all you need it for. You don't need it, anything that needs it will let you know, and will come with it or download it for you; if you are using Visual Studio 2005 or wanting to execute any applications using 2.0 then you do. Otherwise guess not. You can have 1.1 and 2.0 installed side by side. I don't see any reason to specifically avoid installing 2.0
